With the Rugby World Cup well and truly underway, fans and enthusiasts around the globe are gathering for one of the most thrilling and captivating sporting events of the year. While the camaraderie, electrifying matches, and cheers of victory are essential components of any World Cup event, the choice of drinks can make or break the atmosphere.
So Wise Bartender has put together our best pitch for drinks you should be tackling as our home team tries for triumph.
Muddy Mary
It’s no secret that Rugby is one of the muddiest sports out there, but this is a cocktail that should be enjoyed firmly away from the scrum.
The Muddy Mary effect has been created by introducing a generous glug of beef stock, and you don’t want to tarnish the sumptuously soupy sapor by introducing real mud to the mix - that is best left on the pitch and the kit of the players. So keep yourself in the seats of your home, and give this drill-iant drink a winning try.
Ingredients:
- 100ml Seedlip Spice 94
- 400ml tomato juice
- 100ml beef stock
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- A few glugs of Worcestershire sauce
- A few glugs of Tabasco
- 2 sticks of celery
- A sprinkle of chilli
- Crushed ice
- 2 lime wedges
- Black olives
Recipe:
- Throw a large handful of ice into a jug
- Add the vodka, tomato and lemon juice, and stock to the jug
- Shake in the Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco to your taste
- If you fancy, stir in a pinch of pepper to season the tomato juice
- Stir everything together until the sauce dissolves
- Taste, and alter the ingredients if you wish
- Strain into 2 tall glasses
- Garnish by adding a celery stick, olives and lime wedge to each glass and finish with a generous sprinkling of chilli
Sc-rum Runner
Give your flankers something to be jealous of by dedicating your drink of choice to our champion scrum-half. At first glance, the AF Rum Runner might seem like a traditional Pina Colada but the flavours are uniquely distinctive and ideal to sample during warm, humid weather as a refreshing punch.
Rich with berry, banana and tropical flavours that go hand in hand with anyone’s favourite classic rum, our Sc-rum Runner can be dressed up or down however you wish to serve it, and in line with as much vigour as you feel like showing the English rugby squad.

Tip top tipple advice: Mix and match your garnish to adjust the flavours of your cocktail and bring the very best out of your Sc-rum Runner.
Highball
Fancy a little team spirit? Well, that you’ve got to find on your own but we can recommend an excellent cocktail that contains a stellar alcohol-free spirit: the sleek, simple and sexy Highball. Unlike catching a high ball in Rugby, the Highball cocktail requires no special technique but boy, does it pack a punch.
This is exactly what makes it the very best of drinks to serve on mass at your Rugby World Cup event.
Ingredients:
- 60ml CleanCo Clean W Whisky Alternative Alcohol Free Spirit
- Double Dutch Ginger Ale
Recipe:
- Pack a highball glass with ice
- Pour over the AF whisky
- Top with ginger ale
Asahi Super Dry
Of course, we couldn’t get through a blog about the Rugby World Cup without recommending Asahi Super Dry 0.0, its official sponsor. But don’t worry, we’re not just boosting the reputation of this alcohol-free beer for the sake of it.
This dry, crisp, vegan beverage won Gold at the World Alcohol Free Awards 2023 for its lip smacking taste, quality and potential to bring a room of people together. In fact, we’d even say it's the perfect bottle-neck clinking belter for bigging up our boys.
Wherever you plan to enjoy the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Wise Bartender has plenty of alcohol-free alternatives for you to sample. We stock a wide range of alcohol-free gin, cider, wine and even fruity soda options that you can crack open before the tournament begins.
