5 Ways to Drink AF Gin

Gin is one of the most popular spirits consumed by the British public, with plenty of varying brands, flavours and mixers available to transform this botanical beverage into something truly spectacular.

Gin for us is like music. Just because you don’t like one flavour, doesn’t mean there isn’t another out there that is perfect for you; you just need to find it. And Wise Bartender hopes these tantalising tipples will give you a place to start.

1. Rhubarb G&T

We’ll start with the obvious: when someone asks you how you drink gin, the chances are your first thought is ‘in a G&T’. Whilst there are plenty of ways to drink gin, and this one might seem cliche, we prefer to think of it as classic.

Gin and Tonic has stood the test of time as one of England’s favourite cocktails, and why wouldn’t it be? Gin is an absolute staple and so versatile that it lends itself to all kinds of flavours of tonic which means whilst you and your friends might agree that G&T is your favourite tipple for Saturday sipping, you probably don’t agree on your favourite gin brand, or even your favourite tasting tonic.

However, this recipe is sure to please every gin lover out there. Both sweet and a little bitter, our Rhubarb G&T is perfect for those summer evenings sitting on your porch with the sun in the sky and good company by your side.

2. Hot Negroni

You’ve heard of the Negroni, now it’s time to introduce the Hot Negroni; a sultry, festive alternative to a gin favourite. Just like mulled wine and mulled cider, heating gin brings out a whole world of flavours that were otherwise tempered by the cool temperature, and we’re certain you’ll be blown away by the new sensations this brings your senses.

Hot Negroni

Ingredients:

  • 1 part Ish GinISH Alcohol Free Spirit
  • 1 part APRTF Alcohol Free Aperitif
  • Lyre's Non-Alcoholic Aperitif Dry (Vermouth) Spirit
  • ½ ounce honey
  • Hot water

Recipe:

  1. Add the Gin, Aperitif, Vermouth spirit and honey to a mug
  2. Top with hot water
  3. Stir to dissolve the honey

3. Dirty Dry Martini

The martini has earned its place in the cocktail hall of fame through its appearance in literature, 1920s costume dramas and the James Bond franchise. But you don’t need to drink this classic shaken not stirred as popular media would have you believe.

In fact, you can easily whip this one together from your own kitchen and act as your own mystery bartender from home, swapping combinations of gin, flavouring and garnish as you please. But first, you need to understand the very basics of what makes this cocktail such a stand out amongst other fantastic options at the bar.

So start with this classic martini that celebrates alcohol-free gin and then give yourself the freedom to discover exactly how you like it - shaken, stirred or settled.

Dirty Dry Martini

Ingredients:

Recipe:

  1. Chill 2 martini glasses in the fridge
  2. Add the gin, brine and Vermouth to a cocktail shaker with plenty of ice
  3. Shake until chilled
  4. Strain into your chilled glasses
  5. Garnish with olives

4. White Cargo

The White Cargo cocktail combines gin with ice cream; 2 ingredients that nobody would ever think to put together… unless you’d had a few. But, as they say, opposites really do attract because this juxtaposed concoction might seem like a drunken error but is in fact an indulgent, creamy wonderland of flavour.

The botanical notes that make up your favourite gin create an almost herbal undertone and when you think of it that way, it all starts to make a bit more sense. Herbs have been used to counteract the sweetness of desserts for centuries. Think of basil flavoured creams and coriander with apples to name but a few.

Give this incredible 1920s invention a go and watch the world of gin transform before your eyes

It features the dreaded egg white that can feel quite intimidating but let us assure you in this recipe, you don’t have to do anything fancy with it. Simply separate from the yolk and throw in the shaker with the rest of your ingredients. Just like that, you’ve taken a step forward in your cocktail making without fear.
